Celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month

The United States of America celebrates June as Immigrant Heritage Month, and as a Russian immigrant to the United States, I am very proud of the many successes and achievements of Russian-speaking immigrants in the United States and worldwide.

Did you know that the Russian American population is estimated at approximately 2.9 million people? According to the (2000) Census, approximately 5.5 million people in the U.S. speak Russian. Of these people and many of the past, Russian-speaking immigrants have had a profound influence in the United States Sergey Brin of Moscow founded Google, Lev Blavatnik of Odessa founded Access Industries and the Pritzker family of Ukraine founded the Hyatt hotel chain. I am honored to know a lot of successful Russian-speaking immigrants in Chicago and other U.S. cities, who not only succeeded in the United States, but became inspirational leaders and created jobs for other U.S. citizens.

Throughout June we'll be acknowledging Russian-speaking immigrants' culture and heritage– by telling stories of individuals that have made great contributions here in the United States.
