Clubs 101
Clubs 101 – as a busy Entrepreneur I need to be selective about how I invest my time, including choosing which Clubs I will join. It’s a fragile balance between having a wide network of useful contacts and being spread too thin with too many events and board meetings, where one no longer gets any value out of it.
Clubs, just like everything else in life – you get out what you put in it. Here are a few things to consider in making decision on Club memberships:
-What is your “Why?” for joining the Club?
-Define your goals
-Determine if an organization can help you achieve them.
-Check out target organizations in person and be sure to speak with members and leadership and ask questions. Are these the types of people I’d want to connect with?
-Find out which groups others have joined. Early in our careers we were advised to dress for the job you want to have. Look at Club membership the same way – aim to join organizations where other members have jobs you want to have.
-Find out what the membership fees are. Some clubs and events can get quite pricy – make use its within your budget.
-Make certain that you actually care about the organization.
Once you join, go beyond the minimum. Volunteer on the committees, proactively connect with members and attend events.
Bonus: Enjoy the experiences and long lasting relationships!
