Tips on Being an Attentive Panelist

What to do when you are not speaking? I have had the privilege to be invited to be a panelist on numerous occasions and needless to say, it’s a bit awkward to sit on stage in front of hundreds of people on a high chair without even a pen to keep my hands occupied, especially when other panelists are talking.

Where do you look, what to do with your hands, how to position your legs…??? A lot to keep in mind when we need to think about answering the next question.

Here are a few tips on being an attentive and respectful panelist:

  • With facial expressions and body language express sincere interest, and respect towards the panelist who is speaking.

  • Keep your eyes on the person speaking 80% of the time and from time to time slowly glance around the audience.

  • Gentle smile and a head tilt show attentiveness and care.

  • Best way to position legs are close together at 45% angle with ankles crossed. Crossing legs is another option, but less flattering. Even if you are wearing pants, try not to spread legs more than a couple of inches.

  • Try not to wear a short skirt – if you end up sitting on a bar-high stools short shirt is not flattering and do not look good in pictures.

  • Turn your upper body towards the person speaking – it will create good synergy between all panelists. You want to look together as one team sharing your experiences and options with the audience.

  • Keep hands relaxed, lightly holding each other or at ease on your knees.

Wishing you great presentations!
